Hi, I'm Nic. I love to travel. It gives me the opportunity to learn about other places, other cultures, the world — and it affords me an escape from my ordinary life. Follow my journey as I share what I love, where I've been, and what I've learned along the way.

Essentials — The Journal

Apologies for the delay in posting... been a week (or two), if you know what I mean. Planning trips to Stockholm, Mexico, Santa Fe, Marfa and LA — so lots of stuff going on. This post is much more wistful — thus, probably less directly helpful. But who cares!

Travel journaling is the only type of journaling I do, as my daily life is usually too hectic to document (and sometimes writing out a to-do list is about all I can manage). It's somewhat of an obsession, for better or worse — I carve out time in our trips to write. At the breakfast table, on the tiny hotel desk at midnight, on the train...

I spent a lot of time developing a system that works for me — but I realize that everyone is going to have a different idea of what works for them. Some people use Moleskines and LOVE them, others use composition books (I love these), but I have an extremely complicated (of course it couldn't be simple), very custom situation that I really like.

It is:

  • Custom-designed and printed A5 sheets, complete with itineraries / maps / daily pages
  • A 2-ring A5 binder — and accompanying hole punch to include flyers / receipts etc. Still trying to find the right one (as we're not on the A-size system here in the US), but I like this one.
  • (Usually) a silicone band to keep it all together — like these!
I have a slightly updated format now — but this shows the level of obsession.

Like I said, totally complicated and custom — it works for me, as I am fairly obsessive and love designing the custom pages based on each trip. I'm always keeping an eye out for something else — it can get a little tedious — but there you have it!

How do you document your travels? Just photos? Scribbles in a pocket-sized notebook? Elegant sketches? Let me know — I want to share some!
